Reconstruction of the Verovškova Street – Vodovodna Road Intersection

The subject of the project is the renovation of the intersection of the city roads Verovškova Street and Vodovodna Road. Left-turn lanes will be established on both streets. In addition, two nearby bus stops for city public transport will be redesigned. Raised crossings will also be installed on the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship (PST). Simultaneously, public lighting and traffic signaling will be updated. The works are being carried out as maintenance works in the public interest.

Verovškova Street is a collector city road in the business-industrial district of the city. It features a two-way carriageway with a width of 7 m. Along the road, there is a double-sided avenue of trees and a shared surface for cyclists and pedestrians on both sides. North of the intersection with Vodovodna Road, the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship runs alongside Verovškova. The bus stop located on Verovškova Street near the intersection is designed as a turnaround point.

Initial Situation

Near the company LUZ, d.d., Verovškova Street intersects with Vodovodna Road. The intersection is signalized, but previously did not have designated left-turn lanes. Vodovodna Road has a two-way carriageway up to 7.5 m wide, alongside which the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship runs. Congestion occurs at the intersection during morning and afternoon peak hours.

Proposed Solutions

Left-turn lanes will be implemented at the intersection of Verovškova Street and Vodovodna Road. On Verovškova, two bus stops for city public transport will also be established on the roadway. The length of the reconstructed section of Verovškova Street is approximately 200 m. On the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship, raised crossings will be installed at three junctions to ensure the continuous elevation of the PST. The PST along Verovškova Street will be resurfaced. A new junction will be established on Vodovodna Road to serve a planned commercial building. A raised PST crossing over the roadway will be constructed. The length of the reconstructed section of Vodovodna Road is approximately 107 m.

New horizontal traffic signaling is planned for the entire area under consideration. Vertical traffic signaling will mostly remain the same, with only the post locations being moved, while the traffic lights at the Verovškova-Vodovodna intersection will be completely modernized. Stormwater from Verovškova Road will be drained via road gullies partly into the existing combined sewer, while stormwater from Vodovodna Road will go into the existing storm sewer. Horizontal and vertical technical elements take into account a design speed of 50 km/h.
